2007 Business Research and Economic Advisors (BREA) Study

BREA Study Highlights

  • Direct cruise-related expenditures - cruise-related spending (by cruise lines, passengers and crew members) increased from $965 million in 2003 to 1.1 billion in 2007 for all of Canada. Broken down by region, British Columbia accounted for the most cruise activity in 2007 ($765 million), followed by Quebec ($78 million) and Atlantic Canada ($60 million). Strong growth in the BC (21%) and Quebec (9%) contributed to the average of a 16% increase in direct expenditures in four years.
  • Direct employment, wage and tax impacts - in 2007, approximately 9,800 annualized full- and part-time jobs paying $344 million in wages and salaries were directly attributable to the Canadian cruise industry. This was an increase of almost 13% over 2003 when estimates indicated 8,700 jobs paying $294 million in wages and salaries. Combining indirect business and income taxes, the direct cruise-related spending generated $110 million in governmental tax payments. The total economic output of $2.3 billion generated over 16,600 jobs paying $642 million in wages and salaries and a total tax payment to government of $198 million.
  • Average passenger spending in Canada in 2007 increased by 11% over 2003, with the most notable jump experienced in British Columbia (21%). Total passenger spending on items such as lodging, tours and transportation, food and beverages and other retail came to $231.7 million in 2007, increasing from $151.6 million in 2003 - an increase of almost 53%.
  • Cruise line spending - taking a snapshot of activity for comparison purposes, expense data collected through a survey of NWCA member lines in 2003 amounted to $616.7 million. The same survey for 2007 showed an increase to $666 million - an overall increase of 8% with Quebec seeing the largest growth in cruise line spending (from $49.5 million to $51 million).
