What is a cruise ship?

This is defined as being a passenger ship equipped with sleeping accommodation, that provides deep water tourism travel for a period of 2 or more days, and that has the capacity to accommodate 100 passengers in addition to the crew.

Major trends

    • Canada/New-England
  • Increase in the cruise penetration rate: sustained growth!
    • 127 million potential passengers in North America,
    • 24% (31 million) potential passengers are hoping to take a cruise in the next 3 years. Of these:
      • 46% are new cruisers
      • 54% are experienced cruises who repeatedly take cruises.
  • Sustained interest in cruises generates a diversification of the clientele
    • A younger clientele: 47% of cruise passengers are between the ages of 25 and 39;
    • Development of the family clientele;
    • An increasing number of single passengers;
    • A higher percentage of Europeans.
  • Increased “homeports” traffic:
    • The cruise companies have developed itineraries departing from ports that are easily accessible by car (homeports), namely on the U.S East Coast, in order to quell customer fears of air travel following the events of September 11, 2001.
  • Presentation of the supply by theme

    Cruise companies are increasingly developing a thematic offer, in response to specific clienteles according to profiles or preferences

    • Profiles
      • Families
      • Singles
      • Homosexuals
      • Pensioners
    • Preferences
      • Food
      • Adventure
      • Luxury
      • Arts

The quest for innovations is particularly strong for discovery cruisers. The competitive advantage of these cruises lies in itineraries and destinations that are unique, enriching, and remote.
