Saguenay unveils its letters and celebrates the Port Village area’s official inauguration
Saguenay, May 13, 2015 - Saguenay will have sculpted letters just as the cities of New York,
Amsterdam and Lyon. The mayor of Saguenay and president of Promotion Saguenay, Mr.Jean Tremblay, conducted the unveiling in the presence of the Maasdam's captain, Mr. Ane Smit. They also
conducted the official inauguration of Saguenay’s Port Village area.
Saguenay's sculpted letters
In May2012, amandate was given toMarc Gauthier,Traitdemarc graphic designer and owner, to create a new logo conveying the message “fall in love with Saguenay.”
Much reflection and research gave way to the creation of the compact square-shaped logo. It presents the letters saguenay.ca, divided among three lines with a red heart placed where the second line begins. It portrays a universal image and also stands as the signature of Saguenay’s official website.
Since then, the little logo has travelled far and has been seen everywhere on Saguenay advertisements, brochures, banners and promotional items. Saguenay residents are so proud that Promotion Saguenay decided to immortalize Saguenay’s Port Village agora with this logo as a sculpture. Saguenay’s sculpted letters were ingeniously manufactured by regional professionals and craftspeople and their efforts are reflected in the high quality of the finished product. The biggest challenges were in the ''artistic concept'' process to create a feasible workshop product, while respecting the monument's essence and monolithic aspect.
The mayor and president of Promotion Saguenay was proud to say: “These letters mark the official inauguration of Saguenay’s Port Village. Now visitors can have their picture taken in front of these giant letters to remember Saguenay and our city's name will travel around the world.”
Inauguration of the monument
During the same occasion, the mayor and the Maasdam's captain inaugurated a monument to honor Saguenay, which has positioned itself as a top destination for cruises along the St. Lawrence.
As a major partner for the destination, Holland America Line participated in the Bagotville Wharf inauguration ceremonies on September 9th, 2008 and those of the international cruise pavilion on September 4th, 2009 in the presence of the MS Eurodam. On this 13th day of May in 2015, Holland America Line is participating in Saguenay's port village area ceremony in the presence of the MS Maasdam.
The monument is made from granite and aluminium, two elements that are representative of the area. Its form portrays the mountains that descend into the fjord.
