Rémi Dion: A convincing spokesperson!

Rémi Dion

To ensure the success of greeting operations, Gaspésie Port of Call counts on an efficient, professional team of some sixty guides and greeting agents. We recently had occasion to speak to one of the team’s guides, Rémi Dion, and would like to share with you his passion for the Gaspé region and the pleasure he derives from welcoming visitors from abroad.

An official guide in charge of greeting cruiseshippers, Rémi Dion has long been singing the praises of his region. An active trade unionist for 25 years, he has had occasion to meet people and travel frequently to regions across Québec.  Each time, he would recount tales about his corner of the world and became particularly skilled at convincing people to visit the Gaspé. Thus he came to share his passion and showcase for guests some of the region's premier attributes: salmon rivers, outstanding lookouts with commanding views of Percé Rock and Forillon Park.

On the days ships are expected to call into port, Mr Dion is up bright and early to be poised to greet cruiseshippers as they disembark and point them in the direction of onshore excursions.  Whether it be a tour of the Gaspé townsite or greater region followed by leisure time, or leading visitors on a tour of the region’s museums and major attractions, Mr Dion accompanies his groups and ensures that all individuals who do disembark are comfortable and derive the most from their day.  One of the first stops is at a salmon river where he explains salmon habits. Fishermen are always delighted to have a local expert, in the person of Rémi Dion, to answer their wealth of questions.

Readers will be interested to learn that all guides are trained by greeting professionals and scientists so that they are able to explain the region’s diversity of plant and animal life. Each year, new training sessions add to their pool of knowledge, thereby ensuring ongoing professional development.

In his capacity as cruiseshipper tourist guide, Mr Dion sees a fabulous opportunity to showcase the Gaspé, meet people and recount tales of the region. Invariably, when the first ship arrives each year in May, cruiseshippers take particular delight in the onshore spectacle for many have never seen snow before!

Again this year, Rémi Dion will have the pleasure of welcoming numerous ships as some twenty or so are expected to call at Gaspésie this year. His most cherished wish for the upcoming season is simple: “That good weather be on tap and that cruiseshippers be pleased with their discoveries and warmed by their encounters with the local people!”

If you have the pleasure of stopping in at Escale Gaspésie, be certain to say hello to Rémi Dion and get him to recount a tale or two about the region!
