International cruise destination of the year 2012: Destination Saint Lawrence finishes in top three

Seatrade Med 2012

On November 27th at Marseille, Cruise the Saint Lawrence (CSL) enjoyed official recognition as one of the three finalists vying for the coveted title of international cruise destination for 2012 during a ceremony which took place at the sumptuous Palais du Pharo.

The distinction was bestowed upon the organization by a panel of 16 independent judges as part of a contest organized by international cruise magazine Seatrade. Destination Saint  Lawrence finished in the top three together with Scotland, grand prize winner, and the Black Sea region.  The judges examined submissions from 80 regions in five (5) categories.

A delegation of six (6) individuals representing the nine Saint Lawrence ports of call attended the Seatrade Med event at Marseille where they met with cruise line representatives from across Europe. Priscilla Nemey, President of CSL, commented on award results in the following words: "We share this honour with our government partners who have provided us with the means to pursue our international cruise development strategy. Recent investments totalling $156 million have allowed us to rise rapidly among the ranks of the world's leading cruise destinations. This honour positions Québec favourably in a highly competitive market and allows us to provide invaluable international exposure for our Saint Lawrence brand icon."

Cruise the Saint Lawrence groups together nine (9) ports of call extending from Montréal to Îles-de-la-Madeleine. The mission of this sectoral association is to promote Destination Saint Lawrence and to provide international visitors with a quality cruiseshipper experience. In 2012, a record number of over 230 000 international cruise ship passengers visited the Saint Lawrence ports of call, representing a 50% increase over the year previous and resulting in direct spinoffs estimated at in excess of $100 million.
