2013 season shaping up to be a destination turning point

Quay Alexandra Montréal

Barely a month from now, cruise ships will once again make their appearance on the Saint Lawrence and bring to our shores passengers in search of memorable travel experiences.   Through to the end of October, we shall have the pleasure of welcoming an ever increasing number of ships into Québec's nine ports of call. If last season our destination experienced a jump of almost 50% in passenger numbers, forecasts for the upcoming season point to visits by some 225 000 passengers, representing almost the same number as the year previous.

Destination Saint Lawrence will be brimming with activities from May 10th to October 27th
with over 170 stopovers at our various ports of call. On more than one occasion, as many as three ships will be calling into the same port at the same time.

The 2013 season is therefore set to mark a turning point in the development of international cruiseshipping on the Saint Lawrence since, the for the first year ever, the Maasdam will spend the entire season on the river. Previously, this ship typically departed our waters in July and August to concentrate on cruise itineraries in Europe. This change will result in additional numbers of passengers being able to take full advantage of the numerous summer festivals and attractions in port towns and cities along the Saint Lawrence. Excursions have also been developed by our member ports of call to satisfy the needs and expectations of families travelling together during the summer holiday period. Whereas previously ships mainly stopped into port in September and October, some 25% of cruise ship traffic is scheduled to occur in the period from May to August. This is excellent news for our ports of call which are anxious to present Destination Saint Lawrence at its absolute summertime best. Passengers will doubtless be thrilled to experience the effervescence of our ports of call in summer, with additional cruise lines certain to follow suit in the years ahead.
