What Is Shore Power?
When a compatible cruise ship arrives at an equipped terminal, it can connect directly to the local electrical grid and temporarily switch off its diesel-powered generators while in port. In Québec, this solution is particularly effective because the province's electricity comes primarily from renewable hydroelectric power.
For passengers, nothing changes onboard. The lights stay on, the restaurants remain open and the comfort you expect from your cruise experience remains exactly the same.
Behind the scenes, however, the impact is significant.
Cleaner Air Along the Waterfront
Studies conducted for Cruise the Saint Lawrence show that shore power can reduce greenhouse gas emissions from port operations by 81% to 93%, depending on vessel type and operational profile. Emissions of air pollutants such as nitrogen oxides, sulphur oxides and fine particles can also drop by approximately 90%.
The result is cleaner air for local communities, port workers, crew members and visitors exploring the destination.
The Saint Lawrence Is Leading the Way
The Port of Montréal already offers shore power facilities for compatible cruise ships and has become a pioneering example of sustainable port operations in Canada.
More projects are underway. In 2026, the Port of Québec confirmed funding for the electrification of its cruise facilities, with operations expected to begin in 2028. Industry studies also indicate that electrifying Montréal, Québec City and Saguenay could eliminate up to 78% of all emissions generated during port operations across the Saint Lawrence cruise destination.
One Step Toward the Future of Cruising
Shore power is only part of the solution. Research shows that most cruise-related emissions come from navigation itself, which is why cruise lines are also investing in more efficient vessels, alternative fuels and new technologies.
Still, every innovation matters.
The next time you visit the St. Lawrence on a cruise, a simple cable connecting a ship to the dock may not seem remarkable. Yet it represents something important: a shared commitment by ports, cruise lines and local communities to create a cleaner, quieter and more sustainable travel experience.
